Distance Learning - Online High SchoolsDistance learning and online high schools are viable options for students who have trouble coping in a traditional school environment. Some students have serious illnesses that cause them to be absent for long periods. Some have already begun careers and they're not able to attend school on a daily basis. Students who move frequently oftentimes have trouble adjusting to a traditional high school environment. And some students simply are afraid to attend high school. Fortunately, these students now have a chance at getting the education they deserve through distance learning and online high schools. When searching this type of schooling, you'll generally find two options: charter schools and private schools. A charter school is a combined public/private venture. Like public schools, they fall under the supervision of the local school district. They're funded by the government and must abide by the regulations outlined by the respective state government. The cost of attending charter schools usually is free to those living in the same state as the charter school. Students who live out of state can apply and may or may not be accepted. If they are, they'll usually be required to pay tuition and other fees. Unlike public schools, private companies typically operate charter schools. These companies have more flexibility in deciding how the school will be set up and in designing the curriculum, but still must operate within the framework of the state's guidelines. Most charter-style distance learning and online high schools are accredited. If you understand how private schools operate in general you already know how private distance learning and online high schools operate. These schools are privately funded and privately operated. The tuition charged students is used to operate the school. Since private schools receive no public funding, school administrators are free to decide how the school is operated. Not all private online high schools are accredited and it's very important to research this before enrolling. The easiest way is to check with the regional accrediting agency. High school diplomas from non-accredited schools are often viewed unfavorably by prospective employers and college admissions officers. Students with diplomas from non-accredited online high schools might find that they have to 'prove' their knowledge by taking a series of assessments and tests. Interestingly, many colleges are now starting their own on line high school programs. Attendance at one of these schools ensures there won't be a problem with the diploma when it comes time to apply to that particular college. This type of learning environment can be beneficial, especially for students who fall into one of the categories listed above. However, being sick or scared or employed doesn't mean the student is a good candidate for distance learning and online high schools.
