Some people think that, like the other items they shop for on the Internet, they simply perform a search for distance learning schools or programs and then choose one. Distance learning programs come and go With distance learning being such a hot topic, it seems that everyone wants part of the action. New online schools, programs and courses literally are popping up every day. But what's also happening is that online schools, programs and courses are also closing or otherwise going out of business with regularity. With online schools and programs coming and going, how can you be sure which one you should choose? Well, you have got to do your homework! Yes, even before your classes begin. Just as you would begin your search for a traditional educational institution by defining various criteria, likewise would you begin your search for online programs. You've got to more clearly define your needs in terms of online learning so that the next time you conduct an online search, you're presented with options that more closely match up with your needs. What are your goals with distance learning? To narrow your search, start by determining whether you are looking to obtain a degree. If so, what type? Do you want a bachelor's degree? Are you looking for a Masters program? Do you want to perform the coursework necessary to obtain a certificate that you can use to help further your career? Perhaps you never finished high school and you first want to obtain your GED and then move forward from there. Distance learning offers all of this and more. With the basics figured out, it's then time to start asking the tough questions. As you research and evaluate each of your prospective options, you've got to dig deeper into what each of the distance learning schools and programs offer. Take a look at the courses. Do you see the ones you want to pursue? And what about the instructors? You should try to find out their qualifications including the number of years they've been involved in distance learning instruction. Ask about the curriculum, too. Of course, you also want to know all of the costs that are involved. Are there application fees, registration fees, course fees or other fees? Also inquire about the application process itself. Are there application requirements such as admissions tests or transcripts? But most importantly, you need to pay attention to whether or not the school or program is accredited by one of the nationally recognized accreditation programs. If you're researching the distance learning school or program online, you likely won't find the answers to all of your questions.
